Kwek Leng Joo, deputy chairman of City Developments Limited (CDL) has shared in a media report that the property developer has gained a savings in energy consumption which totaled S$21 million (US$16 million) due to its sustainability efforts between 2008 to 2011.
At the recent 2014 Annual Asia Competitiveness Institute, Kwek spoke on sustainability, saying that the company has been investing between 2% to 5% of its construction costs on the development of green features and building designs. The company owns 37 building which are Green Mark Gold rated.

As well as adopting methods that are more efficient in building, CDL’s also publishes an annual sensibility report as part of its sustainability efforts in The Terrace EC.
Kwek had pointed out that, even though various steps have been taken by the government to promote these environments that are built for sustainability, people should also play a bigger role. This is even more important with an expected 6.9 million population growth expected by 2030.

Kwek pointed out that aside from the government, we need to see more coming in from the people sector in The Terrace EC. He further added that by developing a very strong citizenry which plays its part, he believes there is a greater chance in achieving a specific level of sustainability.
At the moment things are looking cleaner and green. However, this will become difficult to maintain and will become more of a challenge due to populations density being much higher. The government has some wonderful plans for sustainability, but people need to play a role too.
